The 5-star luxury hotel Villa Las Tronas was built towards the end of the nineteenth century, erected on a private promontory, a few paces away from the centre of Alghero. Its park, suitably enclosed and with controlled accesses to it, separates it from the town traffic and creates a secure and exclusive oasis. The piers and terraces over the sea favour bathing in the summer and sport fishing in the winter, while the old dockyard, although partially sandy, is suitable for the mooring of small crafts. Villa Las Tronas conserves the historic atmosphere of an aristocratic buen retiro and guarantees its guests tranquillity, quietness, rest and the enchanting view of a gulf that has been defined as the most beautiful of the Mediterranean sea. Alghero is a joyful little town with about 40.000 inhabitants, lively and animated throughout the year, which maintains extremely suggestive traditions. The coast, known as the “Coral Riviera”, is rich in little bays, creeks, reefs, unpolluted beaches, pinewoods as well as vast areas of Mediterranean bush where flora and fauna of naturalistic interest prosper. Unlike certain “artificial” and exclusively tourist resorts, Alghero offers, in the summer and winter, culture, entertainment and recreation with cinemas, discothèques, shops, elegant cafés and the delightful Civico Theatre. The large tourist port is a safe landing-place for even boats of greater dimensions; and near to it coral and filigree of refined craftsmanship are available. Alghero is an ideal place for practising aquatics such as swimming, windsurf, sailing and recreational activities like bird-watching, photography, subaquatic archaeology and fishing, but also those who love tennis, cycling, horse-riding and judo can have the possibility to dedicate themselves to their favourite sport. Founded by the Doria in 1102, in an area already previously populated since antiquity, the city soon became strategically important in view of its geographic position and the sea-bed rich in coral. At the end of a prolonged siege, culminating with the battle of Alghero (Porto Conte gulf, 27th August 1353), it was conquered by the Aragonese-Catalans who deported the defeated people and repopulated the little town with their own colonies. Following complex dynastic events, the citadel then passed onto the Spanish Crown, demonstrating such loyalty as to deserve the visit of emperor Carlos V in 1541. He described the little town as bonita y bien assentada, “charming and well defended”, nominating the inhabitants todos caballeros, “all noblemen”. Enduring even today are the language, culture and traditions of Catalan such as the sacred representations and the famous Easter processions: moreover, the local people still keep calling the town Barcelloneta, “little Barcellona”. The Neptune's Grotto ("grotte di Nettuno"), frequented since prehistory, are not to be missed. They can be reached either by sea, or by land by way of the characteristic Deer's Stairway (“Escala del Cabirol”). Also worthy of note are the Pigeon's Grotto ("grotte dei colombi"), the Green Grotto ("grotta verde") and the little isle of Foradada ("holed islet").
The beautiful and incomparable 5-star luxury hotel is erected on a private promontory in Alghero, only a few minutes of walk to the Old Town and the shops.
